The holdfast with leather pad is designed to fit a 20mm hole in a workbench top of 40mm thickness or thicker. This holdfast has a reach of 220 mm x 350 mm high. It is hand made from good quality medium tensile 3/4" round bar. It weighs 1.225 kg.
Before the advent of the modern vise, holdfasts used to come in all sorts of sizes. Workbenches were covered with holes top and side for clamping work everywhere. The holdfast was sufficiently important to rate almost half a page in Moxon's Mechanicks Exercises (1678 - the first book on woodworking in English).
But by the middle of the 19th century, as regular vices of all sorts of designs became more popular, the holdfast disappeared from view. They work great, are pretty inexpensive, they will last forever and they have a low profile that won't get in the way of your woodworking.
The best part of holdfasts is how fast they work. The clamp will wedge itself in the 20mm hole with a secure grip on your work piece. To release the holdfast simply strike the back of the clamp with your mallet. In general they are used (and work even better) in pairs.

Before using this clamp, wax should be removed with turps and a rag and scuff the shaft with sandpaper.
The leather pad will increase the gripping power of your holdfasts while reducing the chance of damaging your piece of work.
