Established in 1890, Ouchi (pronounced Oh-oo-chi) chisel manufacturing has established a reputation of offering chisels that are widely recognised as some of the best working chisels available. They are a staple of professionals working with wood across Western Japan, and while not offering the aesthetic enhancements offered by some makers, the understated appearance and attention to detail of Ouchi chisels is eye-candy in and of itself.
Mr. Toshiaki Ouchi is the 4th generation chisel maker at Ouchi, and the current general manager of operations. He brings blend of old world, handed down knowledge with modern ideas and techniques, and an unending quest for improved quality and performance.
‘Mentori’ literally translates as ‘chamfered’ and in this case creates the often seen ‘bevel edge’ chisel familiar to most woodworkers. Even the smallest sizes have bevelled blades, an unusual feature.
As with all Ouchi chisels, these feature #2 white steel forge laminated to a soft steel main body.
