Small is beautiful.
This classic compact bench is an improved version of the traditional small bench. The perfect solution for beginners, woodworkers who have limited or no space or those who need their work raised closer to eye level, it fits perfectly on a table or existing bench allowing you to vary working height easily. Fully specified with a quick release end vise that rapidly opens to 240mm (10”) and 19mm ( 3/4") bench dogs this bench works brilliantly well for either left or right handers. Thoughtfully made by John Shaw in New Zealand from American Ash at Kanuka Rise Workshop.
This size bench has been about for some time but the style was beautifully resolved and presented in a Fine Woodworking article by Steve Latta.
As a teacher and maker I have been fascinated by the idea of a compact bench because of the ease with which it can be moved to any teaching location and how well it suited aspiring woodworkers with limited space to get started in at home. I had the chance to work on one when teaching a group of woodworkers in Wellington who had made two and I loved them. I quickly built my own version when I got home and while at work I have found myself gravitating to my compact bench constantly as it allows me to set up work at the correct height for my eyesight and consequently facilitated accurate work. It also eases backache by reducing bending. Soon after this Gaston came to me with the drawings from the Steve Latta article. He also could see that this bench had real potential to enable people to begin woodworking and we began a process together to make a version of such a bench available.
Here’s the result. We hope you like it.
