Based on a traditional Japanese model, precise chamfers can be made easily, consistently and repeatedly with this tool.
The wood is Afzelia Quanzensis also known in the trade as Chamfuta or Pod Mahogany. It comes from Southern Africa particularly Angola, Mozambique and Zimbabwe. It is known for extreme stability.
The blade steel is oil hardened tool steel i.e O1 and the heat treatment is done by Heat Treatments Company in Auckland who do aircraft grade work for this part of the Pacific.
The button head fence screws are stainless steel, the outer knurled nuts are Nickel plated, and these are also available in Stainless steel or brass or Cadmium plated ("blue").
This plane is designed to be light weight easy to use and portable which makes it useful for fine woodworkers/furniture makers and even some of the more refined builders (;) . It will make chamfers up to around 12 mm wide.
The blade is ground at 25° and it may be honed at that angle plus a bit or at no more than 30°.
It is easy to set: one merely pushes the blade firmly down after loosening the cap screw then the cap screw is re-tightened and there is no need to take the plane out of the fence housing for this.
The plane body can slide in the fence housing so that the entire blade width is used.
The inner knurled nuts are used to move the fences apart and should be turned simultaneously. White wax can be used to keep the plane sliding smoothly in the housing - it should remain a tight fit for life.
