Gouge Jig SVD-186R (Tormek)

Description
Redesigned version 2020
New locking screw to lock the Gouge Jig's rotation. This new and additional locking screw allows you to fix the Gouge Jig ’s rotary movement at the required location. With this new feature, it will be easier to maintain full control when sharpening carving tools, such as V-tools. The locking screw also facilitates grinding to a completely flat bevel on violin making knives and chip carving knives when using the MB-100 Multi Base and Tormek Diamond Wheels.
SVD-186 R for woodturning tools
You get an exact replication of both the shape and edge angle on your bowl gouges and spindle gouges, so you can be sure that the tool will behave in the same predictable way on the lathe after every sharpening. Used correctly and together with your Tormek tool sharpener, there is no alternative method that can give you faster or sharper results.
The jig can be set for various lengths of the side bevel. Create your own profile "recipe" or choose one of the recommended ones from the profile selection chart in the instructions.
You can also can also sharpen your turning cutters with SVD-186 R. Mount your cutter onto the special shaft that is included with the jig, and you get a controlled sharpening. Watch the film to see how it works!
Superior Edge
Wet grinding on your Tormek gives you a very sharp edge that will last much longer. A really sharp gouge cuts easily and will give the wood a very fine surface, often there is no need for sanding.
Full control
With the Turning Tool Setter TTS-100, you get exactly the shape and edge angle you want depending on your turning. Even the length of the side wings can be varied so that the shape of the gouge fits your way of turning.
Exact replication
Thanks to the exact replication of both the shape and the edge angle, the sharpening will take less than a minute. Since you only remove a fraction of a millimetre at each sharpening, your turning tools will last for years, probably your whole lifetime.
Gentle on the steel
With the Tormek system, the edge is continuously cooled with water and there is no risk of the steel to become overheated and losing its hardness.
SVD-186 R on a bench grinder
If you have a new tool and need to remove a lot of steel in order to change the profile or create a smaller edge angle, you can with the Mounting Set BGM-100 also use SVD-186 R on a bench grinder. But here you need to pay attention so that you do not burn the edge. After the initial rough shaping on a bench grinder, you move over to the Tormek machine and give the edge the final sharpness.
Thanks to the patented Turning Tool Setter TTS-100 you keep exactly the same shape and edge angle, making it easy to move from the bench grinder back to the Tormek. Getting the exact same angle. You get the best of two worlds with the same jig system – fastest steel removal and the sharpest edge possible!
SVD-186 R for woodcarving tools
The Tormek slow running water cooled grindstone is ideal for sharpening your carving tools. The SVD-186 R makes it easy to sharpen even curved or bent carving tools. The grindstone is gentle to the carbon steel and eliminates the risk of overheating the delicate edge.
The jig can be set to fit the shape of the tool, so you can create an even bevel on the entire part of the convex shaped edge. You can also sharpen down bent gouges with the same superior results.
For woodcarving tools there are no set profiles, the easiest way to set the edge angle is to simply colour the bevel so you can see to see where the sharpening will take place.
Note, for the most delicate carving tools, it might be enough just to hone it on the Tormek Leather Honing Wheel together with some Tormek Honing Compound.
What differs SVD-186 from SVD-185?
SVD-186 is a further development of SVD-185. The jig now fits up to 36 mm wide tools (earlier 21 mm), has an improved clamping insert, and an easy and precise click setting. The lower sleeve has been shortened to work better with the Tormek T-3 and T-4.
